Challenge / Goal
Since 2016, a call bus has been active in Wittlich, which should contribute to the renewal of the inefficient city bus line, improve the decentralised mobility structures and connect the urban centre with the surrounding districts more directly. However, the offer entailed different access barriers (for example, bookability). In addition, the planning of the call-bus service should be fundamentally optimised via digital solutions and, ideally, real-time monitoring should be implemented to adjust the operation at short notice.
Solution
With the Wittlich Shuttle, we have digitised an existing shared-call taxi and integrated it into the public transport system for the first time in Germany. We are implementing the project together with the town of Wittlich and DB Regio (Rhein-Mosel-Bus). The bus station and main station are the most frequently used stops. Ordering is possible via app or telephone in order to meet the needs of every target group. Especially for older people, the service allows them to remain mobile on demand, even without their own car.
