Challenge / Goal
Antwerp has the second largest port in Europe. It also has a strategic and central location in Europe. This leads to a lot of freight/logistic traffic in, towards and out of the port. In 2016, 52% of logistic transport happened by road, which has a major impact on traffic around, but also in the city. Therefore, efforts are being made to encourage a modal, location, time, technology and mental shift in the freight/logistic sector. The goal is to expand the range of mobility products/services and to optimize freight and logistic transport.
Solution
The Antwerp Marketplace for Mobility is a cooperation framework for public-private partnerships. The city is working together with mobility service providers on projects which contribute to mobility solutions in the city and port. Thanks to several project calls, several sustainable logistic solutions for traffic of goods were succesfully rolled out.
Furthermore, the Port of Antwep is working on a project on night logistics. Close cooperation and dialogue with terminals and transport companies in the port will result in an ambitious pilot project.
