Challenge / Goal

A modern building with modern ventilation which standardises air to 22°C.  However, staff do report it feels cool in some areas.  We needed more scientific data in more areas that was non-invasive and could be implemented at low cost.

Solution

We used some Elsys ERS LoRaWAN sensors that had not yt been used on another project to allow us to gather data on a temporary basis.  30 sensors were rolled out across a large 4-floor open building and data relayed back to a Multitech LoRaWAN gateway on a mast on the roof.  This is configured for the community TTN LoRaWAN network so that the local community can also implement their own LoRaWAN solutions at no cost to them.  The data is ingested into our own SQL database hosted on our own computers.  This is to reduce on-going costs which in the UK public sector, most organisations are very sensitive to.

Citizen participation

No citizen participation - but lessons learnt on the roll out could be implemented anywhere else.  Conwy County Borough Council could work with local Housing Associations who provide social housing and help them gather information on their housing stock.
